Summer In My Part Of Scotland – Endless Rain!

You may have noticed that I haven’t been posting as much recently.  Well, it’s been the beginning of summer in my part of Scotland and it has been raining almost nonstop.

Really I should have predicted this, because as far as my experience has shown summer in Scotland is definitely not hot, not glorious and not sunshiny.  Sure there have been patches of time when the rain has stopped, but the ground has been slippery and boggy so my garden antics have been reduced quite a bit.  Indeed, I’m struggling to even find the time-slots when it’s dry enough for me to cut the grass and not have wet clumps spraying everywhere or clogging up various machines.

I have been catching 45 mins here and sometimes even 90 minutes there, when I’ve been doing the most urgent garden tasks (transplanting and repotting for example) but it’s been quite bitty and not one of my overall projects has improved enough for me to take the pictures I’d like. I have a lot pending and it’s bugging me!

The temperature has also been between 11-15c (which is not summery in my eyes at all!) so it’s not been particularly nice to be outdoors in drizzle, far less the beginning of a heavy shower.

From now on, I must remember that the warm weather and glorious days usually associated with high summer occur in spring in this part of the world!  And, of course, that warmth is relative.

Anyway, here are some recent pictures from my walks with the pups and flowers blooming in the garden.  It’s raining incessantly as I write this, sigh.  Soon, you’ll have some progress reports on the various projects, promise!

Moor flowers!

The heather is starting to bloom on the moor.
A funky thistle. But, it is Scotland’s national flower, isn’t it!
A more iconic appearance of a thistle.

It’s a weed, but it’s a pretty weed isn’t it?

There’s something I like about the stark contrast of beautiful life surrounded by stony inhospitality.
A bright spot in the very wet moor these days.

Plants in the garden!

The Hosta was starting to bud!
It looks beautiful even in the budding stage – very architectural.
The flowers started to appear, and yes it was raining – it’s always raining!
A delicate yet strong upright beauty!
One of the first California poppies (not a true poppy) to bloom, and it’s not one of the common yellow flowers! I was so excited to see this!
My sedum is creeping and flowering. Go ground cover, grow!
These triplet lilies are one of my favourites in the garden this summer.
The blackcurrants are ripening well!
And this is what i’ve been reading in my spare moments, during this time of relentless rain. It’s very good.
